Information of the leather industry
The German leather industry encompasses around 100 leather manufacturer, among them are 35 industrial operations with some 2,500 employees. This makes Germany the third-largest leather producer in Europe after Italy and Spain. Industry sales are around EUR 500 million with 70 % of turnover generated abroad.
Leather production focuses on premium applications in the automobile and furniture industry as well as high-end footwear, purse maker products and saddler goods.
Currently 8 million square metres of area-measured leather was produced in Germany. 75 % was processed by customers in the automobile and furniture industries, 15 % by the footwear sector and 10 % was used to produce high-end leather goods and riding sport articles.
